Tommy Blak appeared on the Los Angeles hip hop scene in late 2001 with the release of his instrumental EP, “Birth Unknown, Death Undecided”. This gave people a look inside a creative mind at work. 13 + genres + 7 songs + 1 DJ is the equation he used to make a very impressive project. After only pressing 300 copies for hand to hand sells, Tommy decided not to press anymore copies and hit the stage spinning at MC battles, opening at shows and performing with Gem Collekshuns as their back-up DJ.
Shortly after, Tommy formed The Humanites along with DJ Pride One. Together, they rocked everyone from raves to house parties, and still found themselves on stage behind MC’s and organizing their own events. Tommy wanted more stage time and ended up joining the group ILLCOM. ILLCOM recorded their self titled debut but Tommy left the group for personal reasons after the release. He took some time to reflect on himself and what he’s done thus far and ended up not even DJing for a year.
December 2005 marked the return of Tommy Blak with a residency at Project Blowed, the worlds longest running hip hop open mic event, while 2006 had him working harder than ever before. His 2006 resolution, “Get On Stage As Much As Possible”. And that he did. One way or another, Tommy found himself behind turntables in front of crowds 4-5 times a month. Whether DJing for his resident MC’s (Chief Icono, DVS, Trek Life & Sirah), others, just spinning at whatever hip hop event he could get on.
Tommy even returned behind the scenes and organized Scratch Works (an all turntablist event), hosted scratch and mix sessions amongst DJ’s in the Los Angeles area and helped organize event every month at Project Blowed.
Tommy Blak has shared the stage with various MC’s, DJ’s, and bands around the country including Kev Brown, Oddisee, Aceyalone, Medusa, Crown City Rockers, Boot Camp Clik, Abstract Rude, Mika 9, KRS One, Buck Shot and many more. Catch Tommy killing a stage near you.
